Year 11 into year 12 open evening
We’ve just been informed that due to the lack of volunteers there may not be a Pencoed Carnival next July. This would be a great shame as the Carnival has been steadily growing in popularity. The next committee meeting is being held in the Buffs Club, Pencoed on Wednesday 28th January at 7:15pm. If anyone is interested in getting involved please attend to see what support or help is required. Thank you
IMPORTANT – VEHICLE ACCESS RESTRICTIONS
A letter is being sent home tomorrow with all pupils advising parents that from January 26th the vehicle access gates will be locked from 3.20pm until approximately 3.35/3.40pm. Pencoed Comprehensive and Croesty Primary Schools have been directed to lock the gates following a review last week of traffic movement on school premises by BCBC Transport and Health & Safety. For a full copy of the letter please click on ‘Read More’ below. Pencoed Comprehensive’s revised Site Traffic Management Policy is available within Information/Policies on this website.
A letter is being distributed today to the parents/carers of all pupils in years 7-11 stating that pupils are not to leave school premises once they arrive in school in the mornings. This is for their own safety, as explained in the letter. For example, we’ve had a number of calls from people driving along Coychurch and Velindre Road concerned about near misses both before and after school. As pupils appear to be leaving school premises in order to buy food and drinks we’re extending our Breakfast Club provision in order to accommodate their needs.
A reminder also that parents are requested not to drive onto school site during the busy times before and after school. Again we’ve had a few instances where accidents could easily have occurred.
The Friends of Pencoed Comprehensive meeting at Pencoed Comprehensive on January 14th has been postponed to Wednesday February 4th. Apologies for the inconvenience. Thank you.
‘Safe Travel in Pencoed Group’ – questionnaire & invite to join
A ‘Safe Travel in Pencoed Group’ has recently been set up to develop a travel plan that would benefit both Pencoed Comprehensive and Croesty Primary schools as well as the local community. As a starting point we’ve developed a questionnaire to assess how children and young people currently travel to school and how (in consultation with parents) they would like to be able to travel to school. To complete the questionnaire online please click on the link below. If you’d like to join the group the next meeting will be held at Croesty Primary School at 5pm, Monday January 26th.
Members of our Senior Citizens’ Club enjoyed a visit to see the Aladdin pantomime in Porthcawl recently. The visit was planned by Year 13 pupils as part of their A level Travel and Tourism course. A reminder that a two course lunch and refreshments is available at school for Senior Citizens at 12pm every Tuesday and Thursday during term time. If you live locally and would like to attend please come along.
Mr David George, Headteacher, was also very pleased recently to receive a £500 Marks & Spencer gift card on behalf of the school. Mrs Myra Jones, a local resident, had won a competition organised by The Gem. The prize was to be donated to a school of the winner’s choice. We’re very grateful to Mrs Jones on her decision to give us the gift card as a result of her grandchildren having attended Pencoed Comprehensive.
‘Lending’ of Dinner Money to Pupils
Over recent years we’ve ‘lent’ pupils money if they’ve forgotten their dinner money. However, despite phone calls and letters home to parents we’ve found that this money, more often than not, remains unpaid. Having checked with other schools locally as to whether they ‘lend’ money to pupils, we’ve made the same decision as them not to lend money to pupils in future.
community links are important in Student development...
Pencoed Comprehensive School is a Community Focused School.
We believe that building relationships with our community is very important. Existing community relationships, include Friends of Pencoed Comprehensive, senior citizens, local primary schools, local businesses and organisations , as well as Pencoed Town Council . We believe that community links are important for student development through work experience, Welsh Bacc and other Learning Core community related activities. Hopefully, the community can also benefit from our involvement. We aim to build on close community relationships and initiatives already established as well as develop new links, particularly with local businesses and organisations.
Current school initiatives, either led by ourselves or in partnership with others, include the Senior Citizens Lunchtime Club, Keeping Up With Your Child Classes for parents, Pencoed Town Carnival, and the production of concerts and shows. The aim is to increase existing initiatives and develop further partnerships with the local community.
